You haven't even tried it!!! 🥦
Remember as a kid refusing to try something new, claiming you didn't like it even though you had never even tried it? Your parent or caregiver probably responded with some version of, “How do you know you don’t like it? You haven’t even tried it!” in an attempt to get you to try the thing you insisted you didn’t like (which, if I had to guess, was most likely some sort of vegetable lol). As adults, we typically outgrow that unwillingness to try new things. And I have. For the most part. But, for some reason, for the longest time I claimed that journaling wasn’t for me. When it comes to self care and personal development practices, I’m all in. I strength train and practice yoga. I meditate and do breathwork. I regularly read “self-help” books. But journaling? Nope. Not my jam. Which is unfair, because if I’m being honest… I never fully gave it a try. I didn’t know what it was about journaling that made me so resistant. I heard from many others how transformative it was. But, for some reason, I was just like, “Nah, that’s not for me.” Well, a few months ago, I signed up for a manifestation course that included journaling as one of its primary practices. “Welp,” I thought, “guess I’m gonna have to actually give this journaling thing a try.” So, I did. And, I have to say… I was blown away. The journal prompts provided in the course encouraged me to go really deep. And did I ever! Thoughts, beliefs, emotions came up and I remember thinking with teary eyes, “Wow, I had no idea I felt that way…” I realized that I’m not someone who can just sit down to free write and see what comes up. But give me a good prompt and my pen flies over the page. Journaling with some really good prompts has been an eye opening experience. I’ve uncovered limiting beliefs I never knew I had. It’s given me the opportunity to see people, situations and past pain from a different perspective. I’m grateful to now see them through a more loving, compassionate and empowering lens. Journaling has also allowed my intuition to come through more clearly, inspiring me to take action in ways that feel authentic and aligned with how I want to show up in the world. All this to say, we are continually growing and learning. Oftentimes, it’s in the things we feel most resistant to that our next opportunity for growth and learning lies. Where in your life do you feel resistant? Are there things you’ve been unwilling to try, claiming they “aren’t for you”? What would happen if you “try that veggie”? It could, in fact, not be your jam. Or, it could be the very thing leads you to your next level of learning and expansion. 🤍 Your journaling junkie, Courtney P.S.
